What People Say:

"Thank you so much for the discussion today. I approached my meeting with your advice in mind, got a little emotional but worked through and we traced our issue back to a miscommunication we had months ago. We were able to identify and resolve the issues, and I feel relieved and proud that I was able to do this. You have been such a valuable resource; I wish I could hold onto you after this course is completed! Thanks again."

"Throughout my practice I have always considered a Client Centred approach. Before taking this course I was unaware of the techniques involved in interviewing to allow the client to take ownership of their health. By taking this course I was given the steps and tools to learn to perfect this in my practice."

"The skills I have learned through the Client Centred Coaching Program have enabled me to be more successful in guiding my patients to help them identify what changes they want to focus on and how they plan to approach these. Now after a coaching session, I feel like I have really helped someone. I think the client feels respected and in more control of their health. It is a good feeling for both of us!"

Client Centered Coaching Skills for Health Professionals Program Components:

Workshop:

This experiential and interactive workshop provides an opportunity to learn and practice coaching skills in break out sessions. This is the training part of the program. Learning the skills is a good start but only the first step. This workshop includes:

Health care providers need ongoing support to help them integrate coaching skills into daily client care just as clients need ongoing support to make behavior changes while dealing with health challenges. No change happens without effort and awareness of how and when we slip into old patterns and comfort zones. A shift in perspective takes time and sustained effort. The follow-up outlined below is designed to ensure the transfer of skills to the workplace does in fact take place.

Follow-up Transfer of Learning Strategies

Follow-up after the initial workshop is crucial.

learning curveTo utilize the coaching skills and transfer them to the workplace takes time and effort. Too often great training material ends up sitting on a shelf because once we return to work the pressure of day-to-day priorities surface and we revert to familiar patterns.

Follow-up substantially increases the likelihood of the new coaching skills being transferred to the work setting.

Follow-up greatly increases return on investment for training time and money.

cell phone laptopOne-to-one tele-coaching with email support

Being coached is the most effective way for coaches-in-training to gain insight into how to utilize the skills learned at the workshop with their own clients.

These one-to-one tele-coaching sessions maximize skill retention and ingrain coaching skills at the individual level.

Group tele-coaching with email support

Group tele-coaching offers valuable interaction between program participants. Sharing experiences and learning what is working, or not working and teamwork developing next steps are powerful ways to keep the training initiative alive.

Group coaching calls also help develop shared coaching language amongst the health care team.

Blended one-to-one and group tele-coaching

Blending one-to-one coaching with group tele-coaching allows participants to benefit from both types of support; it builds skills at the individual level and builds connection and understanding between interdisciplinary teams.

Booster shot workshops

Booster shot workshops provide in-person opportunities for participants to connect and gain further understanding of how coaching is impacting the differing areas of expertise within the health care delivery team. Booster shot sessions also provide an opportunity to deliver additional coaching material once the initial coaching skills have been integrated.

Audio assignment

Understanding and ability to demonstrate coaching skills is the key to shifting to a health care coaching model. Part way through the program participants conduct and audio-record a coaching session to demonstrate their coaching skills and understanding of the material. It is best to conduct this coaching session with a participant from the course or colleague rather than a client. A detailed questionnaire is completed by the coach-in-training after re-viewing the tape. This audio-tape and questionnaire is reviewed during a one-to-one tele-coaching session.

Coaches-in-training have said, “I wasn’t keen to do the audio-assignment but it is where I learned the most.”

Audio assignments require that participants have a minimum of six one-to-one coaching sessions.
