Client Centred Coaching Skills For Health Professionals
There is a significant shift happening in health organizations, hospitals, clinics and health care centers that serve clients with chronic disease challenges. The shift is toward a mode of health care delivery that focuses on empowering clients to become experts in their own health management. It involves coaching the client for them to take control and be responsible for the daily self-management of their chronic condition.
As stated by Funnell and Anderson in Empowerment and Self-Management of Diabetes, "In the past the medical model promoted the idea that health care providers know best and patients have an obligation to follow their direction. Patient education was designed to promote compliance and adherence in an effort to get patients to change. Unfortunately this has proven to be somewhat ineffective as the patient’s individual lifestyle goals, priorities and motivators were not “drawn in” to fully engage the patient to commit to their treatment and on-going self-care."
Client satisfaction is important to us.
Path Seekers, Client Centred Coaching was proud to have had our client, present their preliminary findings of our Client-Centered Coaching Skills for Health Professionals Program at the International Conference on Chronic Disease Management, in Calgary, Alberta (October 29th to November 1st, 2007). The presentation was conducted by Julia Mierau from the Living Well with a Chronic Condition Program and Leanne Kiss from the Diabetes, Hypertension and Cholesterol Centre, two divisions of the Calgary Heath Region. They titled their conference session about our program: ‘Client-Centered Coaching: Providing Skills to Providers’.
